What does a service call cost before anybody turns a screwdriver?

Around here it runs $90 to $150 just for a man to walk through your door, look at the machine, and tell you what you already half knew. Then the part. Then the labor. Then tax. A noisy dryer that needed a $12 roller bearing becomes a $280 Saturday.

I did those calls for thirty years. Half the time the fix took less time than the drive. A clogged lint hose. A lid switch. A thermal fuse the size of a stick of gum. The machine was not dying. Nobody in the house knew the cheap thing to check first.

That is not a knock on the homeowner. The manuals are written like they hate you. YouTube shows you ten wrong ways before one right one. And the appliance companies would rather sell you a new unit than a $9 part.
